About Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area

Located approximately 5 km off the coast near the town of Umkomaas in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area encompasses a 12 km stretch of offshore reefs formed by a massive rocky ridge. The shoal acts as an underwater island, attracting a rich variety of marine species such as ragged-tooth sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, and an abundance of tropical fish. The shoal’s complex reef structures provide an important habitat for both endemic and migratory species, supporting vibrant coral gardens and kelp forests. Established in 1991, the MPA is managed to conserve this unique underwater ecosystem while supporting sustainable recreational activities. Diving is the main attraction here, offering opportunities to explore underwater pinnacles, swim-throughs, and resident shark populations. Other popular activities include snorkeling, underwater photography, and boating. The marine area's reputation as one of South Africa's best dive sites draws international tourists year-round. The warm Indian Ocean currents and high water visibility add to the area's appeal. The MPA’s regulations restrict fishing and harmful exploitation, helping protect endangered marine species and preserve biodiversity. Visitors are often amazed by encounters with large marine animals and the vibrant coral life. Nearby Umkomaas provides facilities, dive shops, and accommodations for visitors. Aliwal Shoal offers a combination of adventure, ecological importance, and scenic ocean exposure, making it a top destination for marine enthusiasts and conservation advocates.
